Today is Ganesh's birthday! Ganesh is the Hindu God of success and new beginnings-he removes obstacles that stand in the way of you obtaining your dreams. He brings success and wealth through wisdom, education and knowledge. Ganesh has the head of an elephant as elephants were the "bulldozers" of ancient times. Cultures that were fortunate enough to have elephants used them to build roads, clear land and erect cities with the animal's mighty power. Elephant trunks can rip trees from their roots, yet tip of their trunk is so sensitive that it can pick a flower. Ganesh is the great remover of obstacles as well as the master of delicate issues. Offer him plantains, coins, honey, milk, incense, orange or yellow candles and fresh water.

While we all have our own interpratation of how this planetary influence works in our lives it's important to note the good as well as the hang-ups. We often over look this fact in life-even when Mercury is direct. Mercury is a powerful messenger. While I know that many of my clients are harshly affected by this retrograde, I'd like to take a minute to address these moments of friction. If we know that a certain area suffers when Mercury is in retrograde, we should pay special attention to the area, preparing for it before the retrograde hits. This is Mercury's way of polishing you, making you check yourself, re-directing your focus, making you aware of things you neglect and common slip-ups. Perhaps, if we were all a little more careful, prepared and polished in our focus, these little habitual retrograde hang-ups would stop happening. Because when we prepare and address them, we have solved them. We have ended the procrastination or the sloppy work causing these little mistakes. We are then free to focus on something else. Maybe it's another area we lack in that rears it's head or maybe it's the satisfaction and pride that comes from addressing an area we lack in. Maybe, it's a beautiful balance of both. I encourage you to see the Retrograde as a time balance, a time to wake up and pay attention, a time to get your ducks in a row. After all, friction is what polishes away our jagged edges.

Fertile Fields From Ogun

Tuesday is Ogun's day! As Eleggua removes the stones from your field, Ogun cuts away the brush, thorns and branches that prohibit you from sowing your harvest. Sometimes, we can step over a stone but the constant cuts from the brush and thorns can wear us down! They make our soil poor by sapping away the nutrients from the seeds we plant. Pray to Ogun today to remove the constant, small obstacles that are sapping your roots dry! Let him clear the field to make a fertile harvest! Ashe!

My Interview by Jennifer M. Pennington, Spiritual Empowerment Coach

Jennifer was lovely enough to request an interview with me! I am making a post of the interview here since only members can access it via her site; http://www.jennifermpennington.com/

Hey hey hey Goddesses! It's interview time again! This week we've got a great interview with Sarah, from Conjured Cardea; one of THE MOST AMAZING online, full service botanicas you'll ever visit (at least in my opinion!) Sarah is both down to earth and professional, taking all of her clients needs to heart as she puts all her love and energy into working for their individual needs. So it's no wonder that she's had over 30,000 sales over the past six years she's been operating her business! All with 100% positive feedback! Sarah is warm, loving, and positively energetic and so very dedicated to her craft. A feminine power house of the new age! It is an absolute pleasure to bring you this interview with her.

Now, onto the questions!

1) How did you come onto the path you're on and the place you're in right now? Tell of your journey to where you're at right now and how you got there.

I was raised in a very remote, rural area on 13 acres of land which was surrounded further by plenty of fields and forests to explore. I spent all of my spare time outside, alone, with nature. I acquired an Eyewitness Native Herb identifying guide around the age of 12 and I identified and memorized every native plant and herb around me. I was raised with a lot of folk traditions and practices so my affinity for nature, and it's connection with spirit, was always encouraged. I have lived as as full-time, professional rootworker for 6 years but have been practicing for 15. My path and profession is one of hoodoo, conjure, rootwork with religious roots in the path of the Orisha. The Orisha have spoken to me since I was a child. Oya through the wind, Oshun through Paw Paw river, Ogun at the railroad tracks, Eleggua at crossroads...

2) How do you define being a woman? What does womanhood mean to you?

"Being a woman" is synonymous with "strength". You will automatically have to work at least twice as hard and manage twice as much, all while being underestimated, in order to reach success. Tthat means we are automatically at least twice as strong and twice as successful! "Being a woman" should also be synonymous with "liberation", though this is still in the works. Liberation becomes easier as you age. As we age, we have the luxury of time. We are able to put more time and thought into our SELF; spiritual, emotional, physical, and professional. We become more "undone" in certain areas; the superficial facets of the world which our society thrives on. This liberates us to seek out the important aspects of ourselves and develop them. This leads to liberation in our selves, even if we are not truly liberated in our society.

3) What is something you do you get yourself motivated when you feel down or lacking motivation?

I'm a VERY energetic person and am highly motivated and ambitious. I can't really remember a time I felt I was "lacking motivation". I'm very blessed with a healthy mind set and body to be able to accomplish all the ideas I get. Well, not ALL-I can't always keep up with my imagination! As a matter of fact, anyone who knows me can tell you they can get kind of annoyed by my ambition, haha! Each morning, I prep my altar, light my candles, light my incense, say prayers for my family, clients and community, and put on whatever music I'm feeling at the time. It's my soul food-THAT keeps me motivated and my spirit fed.

4) What is something you've learned personally as a woman that you'd like to teach other women out there most?

The words and actions of others have NOTHING to do with you. It's none of your business what anyone else thinks or says about you. Your reaction should be to not react at all. This is what will weed out anything, or anyone, wasting your time and taking up precious space in your life. Precious, fleeting space that can be filled with family, friends and success-whatever that means to you. React by not reacting. How people treat you is THEIR issue. It never has anything to do with you and taking the high road will guarantee that you rise above every time.

Thank you so much Sarah for your amazing answers and for taking the time to do this interview with me!

If you have any further questions for Sarah or would like to inquire about her services and/or products, please feel free to e-mail her directly at:

Moma Sarah's Traditional Syrup Jar

The following are instructions for a traditionally made syrup jar, made in the fashion I learned and have implimented professionally for over 10 years. Syrup jars typically work much faster I have found. The idea that the syrup flows more easily and readily over the ingredients and over your "goals" makes for an outcome that is just as sweet, without the long wait that some experience with honey jars.

Syrup jars (and honey jars as well) can only be made to draw something to you. You can not create such a jar for negative workings or you will only draw that into your life. These are only to sweeten and draw in goals or people. They are not for separation, hexing or any other type of negative or reversing work-ever.

For love, I begin with an 8 ounce jar (sometimes larger if necessary), 100% pure maple syrup, rose petals I have dried myself either from florist roses or my own wild roses which I prefer, cinnamon sticks, a pair of lodestones, freshly ground coffee with chicory root in it (this can be found at most World Market-type stores), and 5 sweet liquors. I prefer ones like Anisette, coconut rum, Ouzo, 99 Bananas, Blue Curacao, Sambuca, and/or Chambord. Visit your local high-end spirits (as in alcohol) shop and purchase the shot sized bottles near the register. Three is enough is money is an issue. The coffee and chicory works to stimulate speed in your jar (the caffeine in the coffee) while the chicory grounds and root your goal into your life. It works as a metaphysical sealant in my opinion.

For money, most ingredients are the same except I add fresh mint instead of roses and I also add gelt (chocolate coins sold around Hannukah and Christmas, sometimes Easter) high denomination coins such as the gold dollar coins, small square mirrors (found at any craft store) and Hell bank notes in high denominations. You can learn about these HERE.

I then use the appropriate color and type candle-typically pink for relationships and green, gold or orange for prosperity (depending on the issue; green for income and cash, gold for luck and success and orange for open roads and business) and use HONEY WORKS OIL to dress it. Make sure to use a candle that has a broad enough base so it's not tipping over all the time. My Conjure Candles are made specifically for hoodoo work and are stable on their own. Melt the end of the candle with a flame and affix it to the jar lid. Honey Works oil is a combination of my High John, Come to Me, Mint Bouquet, and Do as I Say oils and it produces wonderful results. This candle will be set on top of the sealed jar and lit daily once everything is added.

The last, and most important ingredient in my opinion-a roll of Lifesavers candy. This is old school but it works. This is not only symbolic of sweetening your situation, an offering to the spirits of Attraction, the symbol of the circle to add the power of completion and manifestation but it's also a way to speed up the work. It's like a metaphysical "Save my life!".

There should be room left in the jar so that you may add personal concerns or any other ingredients you prefer.A name or petition paper-inscribed with the name of the target or with your goal.

Inscribe your name, or the target's name three times on the paper, then cross it by turning the paper 60 degrees and writing you goal three times over it. "Crossing" refers to sealing a goal-not something inherently negative as the internet would have you believe. In the case of a syrup jar, you want to cross you goal or target with your intent.

If working on a target, some of their hair, fingernail clippings, soiled clothing, saliva, blood, or other bodily fluids can be added but this step may be omitted in an emergency. Add the name paper, personal concerns, half the bottle of HONEY WORKS OIL, then light the cigar or cigarette. Take a puff then quickly blow it into the jar and seal it tightly.

Once a day dress the candle with a bit of the oil and burn the candle a bit every day and pray for your desired outcome. Spend time with your jar, learn to use it as a tool. It's not a magic fountain-the jar itself will not bring your goal-it serves as a tool and focal point for your prayers, focus and intention. Replace the candle as needed and burn until your goals have been met.

Once your goal is met, bury it in your front yard or to the east of your home.

Happy hoodooing and bonne chance to you!

Vodou In Chicago

These are photos from the Haitian Vodou exibit I visited while in Chicago. This post does not do it justice as it could never capture the ashe' in those rooms, from the objects, practitioners and people attending. These are only about half of my photos and the information was such a wealth, that it will take me time to add and expand on this entry.

This was such a spiritually renewing trip for me. To see these ritual objects, in all their glory, was beyond words-and even the feeling can hardly be expressed in a blog entry. I left feeling like as if I had been reborn. Like fresh breath has been blown into this devotee and conjurewoman. The rest of the weekend was filled with occult shops, practitioners and Brazilian food.

The objects, stories and people were rich in energy-it was almost dizzying. I am grateful to have been able to be this close to these religiously significant and deeply connected cultural artifacts and tools. I hope this post will help to inspire and educate my readers on the very basics of the complex history of slave trade, diaspora traditions and beliefs, Haitian Vodou and Creole Voodoo.

Blessings to you all.

Legba's Veve. Vévé are the geometrical drawings that represent the lwa, that is, the Haitian deities of Vodu. Each lwa has its own emblem, and vévé are therefore numerous and varied.

The central elements are based on what that particular Lwa rules. Such as a heart for Ezili Freda, the lwa of femininity and love. Two snakes, for the cosmic snakes, Danbala-Wedo and his wife Aida-Wedo. A boat for Agwe, the lwa of the sea. A cutlass (sabre) for Ogun, the lwa of war. A cross for Papa Legba, the guardian of the crossroads and so on.
Vévé can be quite elaborate or simple. They are drawn on the (Earth) floor of the peristyle (Vodu temple) using cornmeal or ashes, and their realization, usually by a Houngan (Vodu priest) or Mambo (Vodu priestess), requires a great deal of expertise and skills. Vévé are central to Vodu rituals because they are meant to compel the descending or ascending of the spiritual energy associated with a particular lwa.

A Haitian Vodou Cross.

Ti jan petwo, Grann batala and their dog. Protective lwa.

The cross that bawon lakwa carries which symbolizes the crossroads of life and death.

Bizango warriors. The most aggressive of all lwa. Those pictured withwings are believed to fly over their families on earth, protecting them.

Papa simbi. Guardian of water sources and clairvoyant skills.

Bawon Samedi.

Zo lwa. Protectors of families.

Terra cotta Pwen Ibo. Pwen posess the power of a lwa. Nigeria's Ibo people often chose suicide over being enslaved.

Bawon Samedi.

Danballah

Each law has its own rythym. Each lwa is brought forth in ritual by experienced drummers who know each rythym.

Mercury In Retrograde Will Be At It Again Soon!

Here's a great link to an article about how to prepare for Mercury in Retrograde. How To Survive When the Communication Planet Turns Backwards. This retrograde runs from May 18th to June 11th.

I also offer an amazing oil which really helps to stave off the effects of this brutal happening that can really wreak havoc on some folks. My Retrograde Reverse Oil is created from ylang ylang, frankincense, master root, devil's shoestring and more! Let me help smooth over this 3 week period of mayhem by using my oil on blue or white candles. Smooth over your hands and body and wear to work, meeting with friends, on dates and any business type encounter such as interviews, handling a mistake with a company or at your own business.

Blessings to you all!

Spiritual work is not the Polytheist or Pagan equivalent of free cycle. Do take note.

An amazing blogpost which is important in so many ways. Why is that so many people want our beliefs to have access to the same things that major religions possess but are unwilling to pay for it? It all comes down to equality and respect. https://krasskova.wordpress.com/2015/04/01/spiritual-work-is-not-the-polytheist-or-pagan-equivalent-of-free-cycle-do-take-note/

6 Senses for Eleggua

Monday is Eleggua's day! Don't forget to make an offering on behalf of Eleggua today to keep your path clear or remove obstacles which no longer serve to teach you. Offer him sweets, black coffee or small toys. Remember to involve ALL of your senses in your work. Take 5 minutes this evening to taste the black coffee or sweets you serve him. Smell the incense you light. Feel the warmth of the candle you light and play music that praises him. Use your eyes to appreciate the beauty of the offerings he calls to set before him and the illumination of the candle. Lastly, use your sixth sense to listen to your divine self, your intuition, and let it guide you. Ashe'.

Mercury in Retrograde; Getting It Together

Firstly, Mercury doesn’t actually move backward. Mercury simply APPEARS to move backward, just as the ancient astrologers perceived thousands of years ago. After about a three-and-a-half-week period, this paticular planet will reverse itself and move “forward” again.

Mercury is the planet situated closest to the Sun, so it's orbit is much shorter than Earth’s. Three or four times a year, Mercury speeds past Earth, and this is when we experience a "Mercury retrograde" period. Again, I want to note that the planet never actually moves backwards and I think this misconception is what fuels a lot of the hysteria surrounding this phenomenon.

I'm trusting that, the majority of you, have will acually just have a normal day. Maybe even good or great day! Areas such as communication, technology and travel are often affected.

It is perfectly fine to perform work during this time-I have for the last 20 years. It's the perfect time for realeasing old crap, cleansing your home and self, interpreting and receiving messages from the spirit world, divination and preparing for new opportunities. Mercury is the messenger! Don't be afraid of your own ashe'! Messages are on their way whether you like it or not so stop fearing change, differences, new ideas and approaches. Get ready-the best is yet to come.

Let's reverse the retrograde with planning, awareness and work...and we'll find balance.

Dollar Store Hoodoo and Dime Store Magic

We recently had a dollar store go in about a block from our house. My kids were very excited to walk down and see what they had. I personally don't shop at dollar stores due to lack of time-I go to one, large grocery store and buy everything I need there for the week. I have zero time for multiple stops. However, with one this close , it's far more convenient now. While looking around the store, I was transported to my 23 year-old-self when I got my first apartment on my own. It was actually my third move, but my first time without living with a partner. I remember visiting my first dollar store then and finding an array of useful items for my spiritual practices-including religious icons and pictures-all for only a buck. It also transported me back to visiting my family in Shady Grove, Kentucky and visiting what must be one of the last, true dime and general stores. Walking into these stores, I can easily transform all of those shelves of household items into spiritual tools.

So I've compiled a list of old-fashioned items used in rootwork that can be found at just about any dime store or dollar store.

1 ammonia-The most common base for floorwashes. Add a couple of capfuls, a handful of herbs and curios corresponding to your goal and some hot water. You're ready to go.

2 magnets-You can find pairs of very strong magnets (sometimes magnetized hematite ovals) in the toy section. Add these to your Money Seed jar, Honey jar, mojo or altar to draw in the positive and repel the negative.

3 prayer candles-You can always find the tall, glass encased, white novena candles at these stores. Sometimes red or green too. Dress the tops with herbs and oils and glue a print out on the front of a deity or saint (or a printed photo of a loved one) and you're on your way. They cost a third of what the market sells them for here.

4 play money-This is also found in the toy section (people often neglect to look here for spiritual tools and goodies but it's actually full of them). This can be used as "payment" or offering to your spirits or deities, burned to draw money or used as a petition or name paper to bring prosperity to yourself, client or loved one.

5 cinnamon sticks-Usually a seasonal item (around Christmas) but still inexpensive and useful in both love and money work, making them a good investment due to their multi-purpose ashe'. Always check the seasonal isles. They're always changing and you never know what you'll stumble upon. For folks who follow the wheel of the year, these isles provide a treasure trove of items to help us celebrate and give honor like candles, wreaths, etc.

6 beads-I love the Mardi Gras style beads these stores carry. I buy new ones to give to my Maman Brigitte doll and use them as offerings. Some stores may have loose beads available too which can be used to make jewelry or adorn mojos, etc.

7 incense and incense burners-You can find tons of different sick and cone incenses at these shops. While they are synthetic, and not of the best quality, they'll do in a pinch or when you're on a tight budget.

8 altar cloths-Look in the linen section for small, affordable table cloths for your altar. Affordable is good here because these are going to get ruined with wine, oil spills and melted wax.

9 boxes-Around Halloween time, you can often find coffin shaped boxes (for hexing, dark works or to rid yourself, or someone, else of something by burying it) and around Christmas you can find a glorious array of all different sizes, colors and finishes of boxes. These are useful for organizing or making wish/blessing boxes as well.

10 brooms-Cinnamon brooms can be found during the fall and winter and make a lovely addition to the home. You can also find smaller, natural fiber brooms for actual cleansing and sweeping of your space.

11 dry goods-I LOVE beans for workings! They are cheap, beautiful and harness the power of growth and speed. GREAT for prosperity or fertility works. Make sure to check the dry good isle for staple ingredients like like flour and powdered sugar (to use as a base for spiritual powders), bottles of base oil (to add your own herbs, essential oils, an curios to) bags of beans, baking soda and salt for spiritual baths, etc.

12 rice-Add your own herbs to make a cheap and efficient floorsweep. Rice is believed to be lucky and keep what the household needs (bill money, groceries, happiness, etc.) flowing in.

13 offering plates and cups-You should have at least one or two plates, or shallow saucers, plus at least one wine glass type vessel reserved for your offerings and workings. These can be found for a great price and if they break or get chipped, you havn't invested much.

14 religious/African pictures and icons-Often, dollar stores will have some Catholic/Christen imagery or icons available like pictures of the crucifixtion, Jesus, Mary, angels and Joseph. I've even found some African statues that could be used to represent some of the Orisha.

15 candles-You can always find votive candles at these shops. Regular ones or glass encased. Great to keep a stock of in case emergency work is needed.

16 candle holders-A variety are available. From votive to taper holders, these are always handy to have a stock of. There's nothing worse than buying a new candle, making one or being gifted one and not having a holder to use with it.

17 candy-There are tons of varieties available to leave as offerings or add to your sweet jars. I prefer lifesavers or brightly colored and wrapped hard candies.

18 shells-You can usually find baskets of these which are handy for altars or offerings to any sea deity, such as Yemaya.

19 small bibles-Perfect to keep on your altar to read Psalms or verses to aid you in your work or prayers.

20 Florida water-This isn't usually found in dollar stores anymore but you can occasionally find it in the south.

21 herbs-You can occasionally find small plastic jars of cooking herbs; cloves, ground cinnamon, basil etc.

22 bottles and jars-To store herbs, oils, curios etc. or make spirit vessels, jar workings or bellarmines with. If you can, most of these stores sell Mason jars as well, which have a multitude of uses.

23 silk flowers-Flowers should be a staple on your altar. However, if you can't afford fresh flowers, or they aren't readily accessible due to the season, Silk flowers will due.

24 mirrors-Many sizes and shapes can be found here. You can glue them inside boxes for reversal or reflecting works, place them under candles to amplify their power, set them up next to your photo (or photo of a loved one or client) to deflect negativity  nd put in the bottoms of your jar workings to multiply their strength. Tiny mirrors can be added to your Money Seed JarsMoney Pots or Rose of Jericho bowls to amplify their success drawing power.

25 embroidery floss-This is my personal choice for wrapping paquets and small poppets or twig dolls. It comes in a variety of colors, is very strong and always looks finished and professional when used.

Happy hunting! Let me know what you do with your dollar store hoodoo!
